Champaign-Urbana residents vote to form the Health District. The first office is opened at 307 Wright Street, Champaign. Dr. G. Howard Gowen is named director.

Dr. Gowen resigns as Health District director. He is replaced by Dr. Walter C. Earle.
The Health District moves to 505 South Fifth Street, Champaign.

Dr. Earle goes on a health and sanitation mission to South America for the U.S. government. Dr. R.F. Reider is appointed public health officer in March. He lasts less than a year.
The Champaign County Tuberculosis Association begins TB tests in Champaign - Urbana elementary schools.
Dr. Raymond Voorhees Brokaw is named acting director of the Health District. Dr. Earle soon returns from South America and takes over again as Health District director.

The Health District urges mothers of all three-month-old infants to get them vaccinated against whooping cough, diphtheria and smallpox.
Public Health officials note a rise in cases of poliomyelitis. No vaccine is available to prevent the disease, however.

Spring: Dr. C.F. Newcomb, interim director of the Health District, dies. The search for a new director takes two years.
A rabid dog bites nine people in Pesotum. The victims are inoculated against rabies. All dogs in the County are quarantined and mass vaccinations are ordered. County officials urge the creation of a county "dog pound."
Dr. William Michael Hanrahan is named Health District director in February. He resigns in November.
In October, Dr. Frank L. Quillman becomes director of the Health District. He resigns less than a year later. The job goes unfilled for several years.
The Health District annual report notes that German measles and mumps increased significantly in 1952 over 1951.

The Illinois state legislature passes a $1 million emergency appropriation to buy and distribute the new Salk polio vaccine. The Health District begins polio vaccinations.
