Using This Manual:
This User's Guide provides information about using the Public Health Database. It is designed around common tasks or questions that you might have, with headings and subheadings that allow you to scan the pages easily and zoom in on the information you are interested in. Take some time to browse through these tasks. You may discover things that it will make your collecting of information within the Public Health Database more efficient.

Organization of Data
The data is organized in two ways: categories that consist of topics and by geographic region.

Categories:
The Public Health Database collection of demographic information, health statistics, health behaviors and health care utilization indicators that are organized into ten categories:
Demographics (basic characteristics about the size and composition of the population)
Vital Statistics (data on births, deaths and the illness/disability)
Maternal and Child Health (data focusing on health of mothers and children)
Chronic Disease (focuses on major chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer)
Infectious Disease (focuses on major communicable disease including AIDS)
Injury (data on unintentional injuries)
Environmental and Occupational Health ( focuses on the environment in which we live and work)
Mental Health (data on mental/emotional/behavioral health)
Health Behaviors (data on lifestyle factors such as exercise, nutrition, smoking and drug abuse)
Health Service Utilization (use and access to health services)

What are Topics?
The categories then consist of indicators that fit under the rubric of a category. The indicators are a collection of demographic information, health statistics, health behaviors and health care utilization indicators of the Champaign County and Champaign-Urbana areas as well as the State of Illinois.

Which Topics are available?
The current indicators available are in the Indicators list. New indicators will be added to the list as data becomes available.

Geographic Areas
The geographical areas that this database covers are organized into five geographical groups:
Champaign County is the entire county of Champaign
Champaign-Urbana is the combination of the two cities
CC-CU is Champaign County minus the cities of Champaign and Urbana
Illinois is the whole state
IL-Cook is the state of Illinois minus Cook County

Accessing the database:
The data is available in three different groupings

1: Area data profiles

Definition of Area data profiles
The area data profile is all the data available on a single geographic region. This grouping allows you to see all the data available for that specific region.

Area data profiles findings
A new window will open with the query results. The result for the area data profile is quite long. All planned indicators are listed, even ones that are not yet available. The indicators are in numeric order. You can find a specific indicator in the indicator list.

2: Area Demographics:

Definition of Area Demographics
Demographic Profiles contain information on the population distribution of each region. Data is available by age group, gender, and race.
Area Demographics findings
A new window opens with the query results. The result consists of age, race, and gender for the selected area.

3: Area comparisons:

Definition of Area comparisons
The area comparions allows you to display information for all geographic regions for a single objective/indicator.
Area comparisons findings
A new window will open with the query results. The return is the chosen indicator for all the geographical areas.
