Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Health Educator Receives Highly Competitive National Scholarship - Kari Schweighart, Health Educator for the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) will be attending the National Sexual Health Education Conference titled "On Their Turf: Creative Approaches to Supporting Teens and Young Families" November 14-17, 2007. Schweighart is one of only 5 professionals selected nation-wide to receive the highly competitive scholarship for the all-expense paid trip to the conference being held in Baltimore, Maryland.

Area Students Will Watch Their Promises Bloom and Grow with the Help of the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District - The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) has partnered with Leal Elementary School and Ludlow Elementary School to promote tobacco-free lifestyles for both the students and their communities. First Positive Results for West Nile Virus Found in Mosquitoes in Champaign County - Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD), announced that mosquito samples collected at South Farms have been confirmed as the first positive test results in Champaign County this year for West Nile Virus. Public Health District Moves All Operations To New Kenyon Road Facility - Beginning Monday, July 30th, all operations will be located at the new building. The main entrance will be located to the south of the building. The Divisions of Infectious Disease, Maternal and Child Health, Dental, Health Promotion, Vital Records, Human Resources and such services as STD clinics, WIC, HIV testing, TB testing, Health Works, vision services, and immunizations will all be accessible through the south, main entrance. Environmental Health will be located on the north side of the building, accessible from the small lot off of Kenyon Road.

CDC Releases Early Report of Serious Eye Infections Associated with Soft Contact Lens Solution - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), collaborating with the Food and Drug Administration, state and other partners, has identified an outbreak of a serious but rare eye infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). This infection is caused by a free-living ameba (Acanthamoeba) a microscopic organism found everywhere in nature. Infections can result in permanent visual impairment or blindness.

Champaign, IL - Dr. Howard Elementary School has partnered with the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) to implement the Coordinated Approach To Child Health (CATCH) Program. The CATCH Program is a multi-component program that promotes positive healthy behaviors in students and emphasizes the need for a healthy lifestyle to improved both living and learning. CATCH has three core components - nutrition, physical activity, and health education.
Champaign, IL - Illinois State Public Health, announced that mosquito samples collected in DuPage County have been confirmed as the first positive test results in Illinois this year for West Nile Virus. A positive mosquito sample was collected from the communities of Naperville, Lisle and Woodridge. There has not been any reported positive mosquito samples in Champaign County.
Urbana School Health Center Supplies Local Resource for State Mandated Dental Exams and School Physicals. - The Illinois State Board of Education requires that all children in grades K, 2 and 6 have an oral health exam. This exam must be completed prior to May 15, 2007. Students entering the Early Childhood Program, K, 5th or 9th grade must complete a physical exam and have the physical exam on file with the school district by the first day of school. The Urbana School Health Center (USHC), located at the Urbana High School at 1002 South Race Street, offers parents of students in the Urbana School District a convenient way to accomplish these exams.

April is National STD Awareness Month - Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) encourages all Illinois healthcare providers to alert clients to the increasing presence of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) as they are one of the state's most persistent (yet preventable) health problems. Public awareness and knowledge remain critically low around the U.S., and STD's are occurring at epidemic levels, particularly in 15-29 year-olds. Education and testing are crucial, as many STD's may show few, if any, outward symptoms.
