If you are an evacuee from areas affected by hurricane Katrina

Red Cross staff or volunteers will help you get emergency assistance. American Red Cross will help you register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) if you have not already done so. Red Cross will then help you get an appointment with:

Ms. Shonkwiler will set up an immediate appointment for you to receive immunizations and Tuberculosis tests as needed. She will also refer you to the following Health District services as appropriate:
Child and Adult Immunizations (shots)
Women, Infants & Children (WIC) nutrition assistance and coupons
Dental Health services for children
Sexually Transmitted Disease, Tuberculosis and HIV testing and services
Child Car Seats
Well Baby Exams
School and Sports Physicals
Referrals and assistance for many other health services
Health District staff will refer evacuees who need medical attention to one of four local medical providers and to:

Jennifer Hill will interview you to determine your need for food, housing, furniture and clothing. She will offer you comprehensive case management, helping you get unemployment insurance, job training and referral, food stamps, counseling, schools, long-term housing, churches and other services as needed.

If you want to offer your home:
Some websites (below) are connecting needy people with those willing to offer shelter in private homes. Champaign County officials are not at present placing evacuees in private homes. Most newcomers who have come to the Evacuee Service Center are staying with family in the area.
If there is a need, local officials will work to connect people with those offering private homes. Both the evacuees and those offering shelter will need to agree to a background check before any placements are made. Please check this website for information about registering to offer your home.

The Champaign County Chamber of Commerce has received many calls asking about ways to help our fellow displaced American citizens that have been affected by this natural disaster. In the wake of the unimaginable destruction, that is now estimated to cost five times the amount of September 11, thousands of people are waiting helplessly to return to their communities and assess what they will need to put their lives back together.
