Under supervision, to perform technical field inspections of public places such as restaurants, retail establishments, water wells, private sewage and water supply systems, and private residences for lead and radon to insure that these environments are safe and healthy; to assist in the enforcement of environmental and public health laws and regulations; and to perform other duties as required.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducts sanitary inspections of facilities such as restaurants, retail food store establishments, recreational sites and other licensed establishments.
Locates and inspects water wells and on-site private sewage systems.
Reviews and analyzes results of water samples and well inspections; determines extent of contamination or non-compliance; and advises of proper actions required to upgrade the water system or recommends options to provide a safe water supply.
Following investigations, determines the extent of compliance in accordance with established laws and regulations and orders necessary corrections.
Interprets data from the investigation of public health nuisances and submits recommendations for corrective action.
Collects samples for laboratory analysis.
Performs a variety of tests on air, water, soil, food and paints.
Maintains records and produces reports of inspections, investigations and correspondence.
Investigates complaints involving sanitary violations; collects facts and records data; makes recommendations on necessary corrective action; and performs follow-up inspections.
Assists in epidemiological investigations.
Conducts educational training sessions and exercises for environmental health programs.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with public health officials, building and plumbing inspectors, contractors, professional and trade groups, business owners and the general public.
Provides technical training and instruction in conducting field inspections to In-Training staff.
Acts as a lead for In-Training employees in the performance of their tasks.
Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONSEssential Knowledge and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of basic principles and practices of environmental health.
Working knowledge of applicable environmental health laws and codes.
Working knowledge of the methods, techniques and equipment used in the testing and evaluation of air, water, soil, food, and other environmental health hazards.
Working knowledge of computerized programs.
Ability to secure facts through investigations and inspections and to analyze and interpret public health nuisances and make appropriate recommendations.
Ability to perform inspections and recommend corrective action to eliminate public health nuisances.
Ability to effectively promote compliance of environmental health regulations.
Ability to maintain accurate records and write accurate reports.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Physical ability to conduct on-site inspections of various facilities, properties and mechanical components related to environmental health.
Ability to work in inclement weather and under varying conditions of sanitation, temperature and potential health risks.
Ability to use computerized management systems to record and coordinate information.
Ability to provide technical training and instruction in conducting field inspections to In-Training staff.
Training and Experience
Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor's degree in environmental health or a closely related field with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in a physical or biological science.
Licensed as an environmental health practitioner or equivalent license or registration recognized in the field of environmental health.
SANITARIAN IN-TRAINING: Work is performed under the direct observation and instruction of a licensed Sanitarian.
Same as the SANITARIAN I.
Must acquire an environmental health practitioner’s license or equivalent license or registration recognized in the field of environmental health within three (3) years of employment.
