Dental FAQ

Dental Frequently Asked Questions

What are your clinic hours?
Monday - Friday, 8 am - 4 pm (closed for lunch 12:15-12:45)

Where are you located?
201 W. Kenyon Road, Champaign and Urbana School Health Center, 1002 S. Race Street, Urbana

What ages to you see?
Champaign Clinic treats district children age 3-18 who are still in school, Urbana Clinic treats only Urbana school children.

Champaign Clinic also treats adults living in Champaign or Urbana who have a medical card, however, there is a long waiting list. Our adult services are limited to: exams, x-rays, simple extractions, and fillings; we cannot provide crowns or any type of dentures. Adult patients should have their cleanings done at Parkland College in the Dental Hygiene Clinic: 351-2221. Because our adult waiting list is 200+, we also suggest that adults with or without the medical card call Aunt Martha's in Danville, IL at 217-442-8790; rides to Danville can be obtained through CRIS by calling (217) 431-0653.

Where do I go if I live in the county?
CIDES (Central Illinois Dental Education Services) is the County Access, they can schedule with an area dentist: 217-359-7404

What should I bring to a first appointment?
The parent, foster parent, or legal guardian must always be present for every appointment and stay with their child throughout the appointment. The Urbana School Health Center allows Middle School and High School age students to come to dental appointments alone after the first visit with a parent, guardian, or foster parent. If you are legal guardian you must provide legal documentation stating so, this could include court documents or a notarized letter from the bio parent. Every appointment you must bring your current medical card, photo ID for the subscriber, and school ID for children 17yr and 18yrs.

What if I need to cancel my appointment?
We ask that you give us 24 hour notice.

What will take place at a first time visit?
Your child will be seen by a Registered Dental Hygienist who clean the teeth, and provide a fluoride treatment along with oral health instruction; the RDH may also take x-rays and may apply dental sealants if permanent molars are present. A dentist will do an exam and explain any further treatment that is needed. Your child should continue to see the RDH and dentist every 6 months for follow care. We will remind you to call to schedule this appointment by mailing a postcard to your home.

My child's school is requesting documentation of a dental exam; can I get that from the clinic?
Your school is asking for a PROOF OF SCHOOL DENTAL EXAMINATION FORM which we provide when your child comes in for an exam or is seen by our clinic in their school if you have provided consent for us to see them when we come to the school. The State of Illinois requires this for all K, 2nd, and 6th grade student by May 15, 2008.

What are the grades this exam is required?
Kindergarten, second, and sixth grade. The PROOF OF SCHOOL DENTAL EXAMINATION FORM is kept on file at your child's school and in our dental office. The state asks that the school withhold final grades for any child who is not compliant with this by May 15, 2008.

Is there anything you would like to add?
Yes, CUPHD Dental visits all Champaign-Urbana Elementary Schools and Middle Schools each year to see K, 2nd, and 6th grade students who have a signed consent on file for dental exams, cleanings, fluoride varnish, and dental sealants. We also provide dental education during our visit and in the classroom setting at the request of the school. Our presentation is suitable for K-5th grade students, is hands-on and kid-friendly; the students are given free toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, a brushing chart and dental education activities sheets, and a letter for parents with information about our clinics. The presentation is best suited to classroom settings of approx. 25 students, takes 20-30 minutes, depending on the questions that the students have, and can be requested by calling Alicia Ekhoff at (217) 531-4538.
