TICKS

Now that the weather is getting warmer you will probably be outdoors more and more. Spring and summer also bring ticks which can spread serious diseases such as Lyme disease as well as others.

There are some things you can do to help prevent tick bites and possible tick-borne diseases. This is especially important if you are a camper, hiker or work in areas ticks are common.

  • Use a repellent with DEET, 20% or more.

  • Permethrin, this is sprayed on clothing and footwear to keep ticks off. Permethrin should last through several washings. Do not wear until dry.

  • Wear light colored clothing so that you can see any ticks that may be on you.

  • Tuck the legs of your pants into your socks

  • Avoid tick infested areas. Walk where you can avoid brushing against plants, shrubs, etc.

  • Wear a hat if you are in the woods

Be sure to check yourself and children for ticks after being outdoors.

If you take your pet with you use appropriate precautions such as medicines or tick collars. Talk to your vet to find out what is best for your pet.

If you get bitten by a tick and would like to have it identified you can bring it to us at CUPHD. We do not treat for tick related diseases, you should talk to your physician about tick bites.
